I wanted this book as soon as I saw the cover and read the synopsis. I thought it would be perfect for my nine year old son. He really enjoys adventure series and we have enjoyed reading some of them together. We read the first chapter of The League and the Lantern tonight and even though the action hadn't really started yet we were introduced to the main character who seems like a good kid and the humor that the story has in store for us. My seven year old daughter was in the room while I was reading and she was enjoying it as well, so I definitely think it's a book all kids will like. And if you're a parent who does read-alouds this will be one that will keep you just as entertained. The official target audience is readers aged 9-14.
As a parent you can feel good about your child reading this book for a number of reasons. To start, the author has taken 140 of the top vocabulary words that middle schoolers need for success and invisibly wove them into the story. Historic sites are included in the story's setting. Plus the characters in the story discover lessons in mercy, compassion and charity. Family and friendship are important themes in the book as well.
About the Author
