Burgers' Smokehouse City Ham Review

Before the holidays we were blessed with the opportunity to review a great meat product from Burgers' Smokehouse.  Even without knowing what type of product we were going to receive I knew it was something I didn't want to pass up.  I took one look at the Smokehouse.com website and knew we'd be in for a treat.  The Smokehouse produces a wide variety of products.  They started with ham but now also have specialty smoked meats including turkey, bacon, sausage, chicken and even buffalo and seafood.  They also have desserts!  I appreciate that this company is located in my neighboring state of Missouri and still operates on its original location.

We received a Hickory Smoked City Half Ham from Burgers' Smokehouse and it was one of the few products I've reviewed that has made my hubby excited. You see we don't get to purchase ham very often and he loves to have it for sandwiches.  I was thrilled to receive it because we were going to be hosting our small group at our house soon so it made the perfect main course of our meal to serve.  When we received it we placed it in the freezer until a few days before our event.  The ham comes with instructions that state it should be refrigerated upon arrival, but it can also be frozen for up to 6 months.  The instructions include methods for heating, how to position your ham, how to glaze it and how to cut, slice and serve.

Our ham was so large it didn't completely fit into our crock pot.  We had to build a type of foil dome cover for it.  We kept it simple by using our crock pot, but you can get fancier and Burgers' Smokehouse provides instructional videos for doing so on their website.

A honey glaze came with the ham so we were sure to use that for additional flavor.  Because our company arrived prior to having our ham sliced up we failed to get pictures of the final product, but you can take my word that it looked great on the platter.  It tasted even better.  The hickory smoked flavor was wonderful and I really appreciated that it wasn't as salty as a lot of hams often are.  The meat was tender and juicy and the leftovers made for many nice lunch sandwiches for my hubby.  We also had enough ham that were able to dice some up to use in our Creamy Potato Soup recipe.
