St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and it’s never too early to begin planning what you’re going to do or wear for that day. Whether you dress up in costume, accessorize your outfit with green accents, or create your own green beer and eggs, there are many ways to incorporate the color into your day. If you’re one of those people, like me, who would rather save money than spend it all on this Irish holiday, I have come up with five fun and frugal ways of how you can incorporate green into your St. Patrick’s Day holiday.
Decking out your St. Patrick’s Day outfit with various green accessories is one of the easiest ways for you to bring your Irish heritage to light. Many places, like costume stores, party shops, and places like Target or Wal-Mart offer a selection of crazy affordable St. Patrick’s Day costumes and accessories to complete your look during the season. These accessories include shamrock sunglasses, shamrock headbands, green tights and socks, and green nails and eyelashes. All of these accessories are usually less than $5.00 each and are great to wear for future St. Patrick’s Day events!
Green Eggs and Ham, Anyone?
Since green is the major theme of St. Patrick’s Day, it wouldn’t be a holiday without green eggs and ham. Based on the best-selling book by Dr. Seuss, green eggs and ham is a simple breakfast or brunch meal that kids and adults will love. With so many recipes out there to choose from, one that I found which stood out from the rest of was this Gluten Free Baked Green Eggs and Ham from simplygluten-free.com.
Green Beer
St. Patrick’s Day tends to be a holiday filled with merriment. With this merriment comes a long celebration involving green beer or other traditional Irish ales. For a frugal person celebrating this holiday, try creating your own green beer! Just get food coloring! You can easily get the dye for under $10 at Wal-Mart or other grocery stores. The color that you should use is green, which mixes better with the golden tones of a light beer. While food coloring maybe one option to turn your beer green, another healthier, more eco-friendly way is to take one tablespoon of wheatgrass and mix it in a 16 ounce glass of beer. Wheatgrass is a little pricier ($22.00 or more), but it can add nutrients to your daily diet long after your St. Patrick’s Day festivities, not to mention help alleviate the after effects of a long night of celebrating.
Create Your Own St. Patrick’s Day T-Shirt
Here’s another idea that goes along with creative St. Patrick’s Day accessories: making your own St. Patrick’s Day t-shirt! This is a fun and frugal way to incorporate green to your wardrobe. When creating your own t-shirt, you want to use fabric paint, which is way handier and less messy than regular paints. Fabric paints can range from as little as $5 a bottle to $15 and you can find cheap blank t-shirts at art supply stores. Fun ideas for your t-shirt include Irish quotes, drawings of leprechauns or four leaf clovers. This is a great way to get your children involved with the festivities, as well.
