My school aged kiddos and I try to read aloud together several nights during the week. While I love sharing books with them that I read when I was their age it's really great to discover new books together that are fun and relate-able for them. Right before Thanksgiving my 8 year old daughter and I read Beatrice Zinker, Upside Down Thinker by Shelley Johannes. The book was released earlier this Fall and is a good story about friendship and being yourself.
About the Book:
BEATRICE ZINKER, UPSIDE DOWN THINKER by debut author Shelley Johannes is the first book in this heartfelt, unique, four-color illustrated Beatrice Zinker series. With adorable four-color illustrations and a corky sense of humor throughout, readers will enjoy this endearing story. Spunky third-grade Beatrice realizes that some friendships are worth risking recess for, and sometimes all it takes is the simplest act of kindness to “turn that frown upside down!”
Beatrice Zinker, Upside Down Thinker introduces us to Beatrice Zinker, of course, and the rest of the Zinker family along with her best friend Lenny. We learn that she is someone who does her best thinking maybe a little differently than most. It then takes us on a journey of her first day of school and how she handles it when things don't go the way she planned that day. The story felt new and different to me and I liked that Beatrice, although quirky, was not a trouble maker. I liked that it addressed a struggle that many friendships face when new people are added into the mix. I think it's a story that kids and girls especially can enjoy and appreciate. The characters and setting are a natural fit fit for additional books in the series.
My daughter enjoyed the illustrations that went along with the story and I appreciated the vocabulary that while expansive was a perfect level for the suggested age range of 7 to 10 years old.
I highly recommend this to anyone with school aged chapter book readers who would enjoy meeting a new girl character that thinks on her own and isn't afraid to be herself. Beatrice Zinker, Upside Down Thinker published by Disney-Hyperion is available at all major book retailers now and on Amazon.
Interesting book! It looks fun and kinda reminded me of the morality in Wonder. Plus i was picturing my son laughing at the picture of the kid upside down in his chair.
ReplyDeleteMy niece would get a kick out of this.
