Making Time to Play Outdoors in the Fall @Voice_of_Play #YearRoundPlay

Fall is an incredibly busy time of the year for us.  I'm sure many of you can relate especially if you have school age kids who like to participate in activities.  We find ourselves running from one activity to the next on week nights with homework in between.  It can be hard to just take some time to play together as a family.  I cherish our weekends and the time we can have together being out and doing things.  My kids love their devices, but I'm thankful that they love being out of the house and active just as much, if not more.  As the weather turns colder it gets a bit harder for us to get out, but I still think it's important we have that time getting some fresh air and enjoying each other's company.

Many of our fall weekends were spent at an Iowa farmyard full of things for play like a corn pool, bouncy pillow, slides, pedal bikes and more.  We got a season pass so we could go and play together even if it was just for an hour or two.

Fall is my favorite time of the year to go camping.  Cooler weather makes for cozy campfires and sleeping soundly in sleeping bags.  My ideal campsite is close to a playground for the kids, but also close to great hiking trails so we can do some climbing, boost our heart rates and enjoy the scenery along the way.

Fall also brings lots of falling leaves that turn the backyard into a natural playground.  I don't think jumping in a pile of leaves ever gets old.  If I'm willing to rake the leaves into piles I've got three kids ready to jump and roll and toss.

The leaves are mostly gone now and we've had our first snowfall here in Iowa. That doesn't mean our outdoor play is going to come to an end though.  Walks in the crisp air will still take place just maybe with snowshoes. Snowmen will be built and sleds will be pulled uphill.  No matter what the weather has in store we'll be making sure our kids get out and enjoy the outdoors.

Does your family enjoy spending time together outdoors?

  1. Playing outside is so much fun. Sometimes you have to just make the kids put down the electronics and go have fun. They will enjoy it.

  2. I love the picture of kids sitting on the hay and playing in the leaves. We have the same issue, being busy, getting colder, darker earlier, means less play time.

  3. Your photos make me miss some of the states where my family and I used to live in, when we were growing up, and playing outside. Where we are now, there aren't any trees, but the ones in Virginia were great. It made me want to build a treehouse! I also loved the wooded areas when we lived in Atlanta.

  4. We used to play outside a lot when I was young. I don't think kids today have as many opportunities for it as we did.

  5. We used to love playing in the leaves when we were kids. Now that we live in the South, we don't get that same experience as we did as kids!

  6. It looks like a lot of fun, if it were a little warmer. We lucked out for a while, and then we turned arctic.
