I will always say that parenting is a tough job. Whether you are taking care of your own kids or someone else's, whether the children are old or young, boys or girls it's a job that is full of complications, hard situations and rapidly changing emotions. The rules seem to change from day to day, so how can you be sure you're doing a good job? I confess that I question my parenting skills on a daily basis so whenever there is an opportunity to learn ways to speak to my children and grow our relationship I take it. I recently had the chance to review the newly published book Mother & Son: The Respect Effect by Emerson Eggerichs, PhD. It asks you to consider the all–important mother/son relationship in a new way: respect, as in the mother should respect the son.
As a mother of two sons I was drawn to the title first and then the message that boys need their mother's respect just as much as, if not more than, their mother's love. I think I'm reading this book at the perfect time. My oldest son will be 10 this summer and there are so many situations in the book I can relate to. I also have a 2 year old, but without having the older son it would be harder to put some of the ideas into practice. Some of the ideas are very simple. It should be easy to tell your kid when you are proud of him whether it's on the basketball court or helping out at home. Other times it's going to be harder letting my son know I respect him even when I'm disappointed with his behavior. That is going to take some practice. I get it though and a lot of what this book says makes perfect sense to me. The book provides a simple definition of respect early on and then provides a template to guide you and apply in your life. I don't feel like it's a book you read once and then put away. I view it more like an instruction manual of sort that will be referenced at many times. Whether or not you totally agree with everything the author says I think if you have boys in your guardianship this is a book you should check out.
