Joy Williams Venus Album Review #JoyWilliams #O2O

Disclosure:  I participated in the Joy Williams Venus album review program as a member of One2One Network. I was provided an album to review but all opinions are my own.

Venus, the new solo album from Joy Williams will be released on June 29th from Sony Music.  Joy Williams is a new artist to me, but may be more familiar to others as one half of the former duo The Civil Wars.  That Grammy winning folk-rock group officially broke up in 2014, but even before that Joy was writing songs many of which would end up on this album. For Joy, the album is a coming-of-age album where she becomes the woman she wants to be.  It is a theme that is consistent throughout the album.  Joy Williams loves the artists Annie Lenox and Kate Bush and I can hear that influence on the album as well.

The album opens with "Before I Sleep" which was actually the first song she wrote for the album. At first it sounds haunting and then it speeds up with lyrics I can often relate to "I've got miles and miles to go before I sleep".  I think my favorite song on the album is "You Loved Me".  I like the melody and the lyrics.

I appreciate the emotion she poured out into this music and most of the album allows Joy to demonstrate her strong vocals.  I would consider the album more easy listening than even folk and it can be feel a little bit slow at times. The most upbeat song on the album is "Woman (Oh Mama)".  You can watch the video that song here:
