I've read a lot of books in the past year, but the books I typically read are ones that have taken the typical route through publishing. Otherwise someone like me who is not attune to all things in the literary world would never have known about it. That's why I was interested in reading about the novel After by Anna Todd. This is a book that was written - get this - by the author using her smartphone. Anna Todd started writing it as a hobby and using Wattpad she could publish pieces of her story.
Wattpad is a free social reading and writing app that allows you to share stories and it is the world's largest community of readers and writers. It makes it easy for anyone, whether you have ever written anything or not, to become a writer. It's awesome that it's free to use to create content, but it's also free if you just want to read stories as well. And since it's a community you can get notifications when your favorite writer shares a new chapter and you can leave feedback. I've never been involved in a book club, but I always want to talk about the books I'm reading so I love the thought of communicating with lots of other people that are reading something at the same time as I am.
Anna Todd didn't plan on being an author and held various jobs, but now what was a hobby for her has turned into a four-book series. Plus After is also being adapted for the big screen. The love story has now been viewed over a billion times!
The After series tells the story of Tessa Young, an optimistic freshman at Washington State University, and the dark, troubled British bad boy who has stolen her heart. His name is Hardin Scott, and his character was inspired by One Direction singer Harry Styles. Turns out Anna Todd is a serious One Direction fan. Find Anna on Wattpad as Imaginator1D, Twitter as @Imaginator1Dx, and Instagram as @Imaginator1D.
As one of the most talked about stories on the internet, the After series gained attention from Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. They published the first installment of the novel in October 2014. The print edition is now available in 26 countries. You can get your print copy at Barnes & Noble or get it for your e-reader.
