Stewie Boomstein Starts School is about a child who is going to school for the first time and doesn't have a good first day of school. The book addresses many of the concerns and fears children have about going to school and also shows a way to overcome some of that. The book is best for children ages 3 to 6 who are first starting preschool or kindergarten. I read it with my daughter who will be starting kindergarten soon and she liked hearing about Stewies's school. Unlike Stewie in the story though my daughter is more of a go with the flow kind of girl and doesn't always have to know what's happening next to be involved in the moment.
The author's goal with Stewie Boomstein Starts School is to provide parents with a resource for smoothing the transition for kids entering school. The book even includes a question and answer section with experts on how to prepare you and your child for school.
As a person who thrives on routine I can totally relate to Stewies "need to know". I think it's a great idea for parents to become familiar with the daily routine of the school day just so they are able to talk to their children about their day. If you have kids that aren't big talkers sometimes you just have to ask the right questions to get them to open up.
My daughter and I both enjoyed the fun illustrations on all the pages of the book. They did a great job capturing facial expressions and adding details that make what's happening in the story stand out. The story itself is very realistic in sharing the many emotions a child goes through in one day.
I would definitely recommend Stewie Boomstein Starts School to parents of children who will be going to school for the first time. It provides an easy transition to conversation with your child and can help you answer questions they might have.
