This post brought to you by Walgreens. All opinions are 100% mine.
If you're a regular reader of this blog than you already know of my fondness for Walgreens. It's my go-to store for personal and health care items and I know it is the go-to store for many people's prescription needs. As of January 1st of this year that is changing for many people because of a decision made by Express Scripts to no longer include Walgreens in its prescription network.
Express Scripts is a company that handles prescription drug benefits and claims for many health insurers clients. Walgreens had worked with Express Scripts over the past year to try to negotiate a new contract, but an agreement couldn't be reached. As of December 31st Walgreens no longer has a contract with Express Scripts.
For customers that are on an Express Scripts plan that means getting prescriptions filled at a new pharmacy with a new pharmacist and potentially an increase in time and money just to get to the pharmacy. The prescription itself won't cost any less and could actually cost more without the competitive pricing and range of generic brands that Walgreens Pharmacy offers.
One of the largest groups impacted by the failure of Walgreens and Express Scripts to negotiate a new contract are our nation's military families. One of Express Scripts clients is Tricare, a health and prescription drug program for America's military service men and women. Walgreens wants to help support and serve the troops, but as of right now Express Scripts refuses to negotiate a separate contract for the benefit of the Tricare program and its beneficiaries.
Walgreens wants to help their customers save money on their prescriptions. That is why the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens was created. If you lack prescription drug coverage or your current coverage is insufficient you and your immediate family will be eligible to get discounts on your prescriptions. This includes generic medications plus savings on more than 8,000 brand-names. Right now Walgreens is offering a special discount on an annual membership for its Prescription Savings Club.
If this change has impacted you and you're upset about not being able to use your Walgreens pharmacy please contact your local media to voice your dissatisfaction. If you would just like to learn more or show your support of Walgreens be sure to follow Walgreens on Twitter and you can "like" Walgreens on Facebook.
