Gift Cards Rock for Christmas #GiftCardsRock

Whenever I get asked what I would like for a gift whether it's for Christmas or my birthday my standard response is a gift card would be good.  I'm not just saying that because I can't think of any other ideas.  I truly love receiving gift cards.
There are two different categories gift cards can fall into - Gift cards for necessities and Gift cards for Entertainment.   I'd love to have a gift card for our local grocery store or Walgreens because I spend money there every week.  Target gift cards are awesome especially when you have little ones because it seems there are always diapers and wipes to buy.  Those gift cards are great because they're saving me money that otherwise would come out of my own pocket.
Gift cards for Entertainment include cards I've been given to use for dining out and activities.  I was able to get a Disney gift card this year and I'm so excited to be able to use it on our Disney vacation.  These gift cards are used for things I might not have bought with my own money, but because they were gifted it's a nice treat.  If I receive or earn gift cards to chain restaurants I like to save them for when we're traveling.  It helps offset the cost of our vacation expenses.
This season we have bought many of our own gift cards to use toward our home improvement project.  Whenever there is a deal at our local grocery store to save on gift cards or save on a future grocery order we've been picking up Lowe's gift cards.  We know we will use them on the project and it's a great way to put some extra $$ back in our pockets.
I also love to give gift cards for gifts.  There are multiple reasons for this, but the primary reason is that by giving the gift card the recipient can use it toward something they really want or need.  Another reason gift cards are great is if someone is saving up for a "big ticket" item.  The year my husband decided to buy a canoe he asked solely for gift cards for his birthday and Christmas and was able to pay for most of the canoe that way.  It ended up being an awesome gift that many people contributed to and it's something he'll always have to enjoy.
Other reasons gift cards are great for gift giving:
  • they're easy
  • they're always appreciated
  • shopping can be done last minute (writing this from experience!)
So what about you?  Do you love to give and receive gift cards?
