Review ~ The 5 Love Languages of Children

I first heard of the 5 Love Languages on a mini-marriage retreat day with my husband at our parish.  That afternoon we learned that there are 5 Love Languages and my hubby and I are very different in the love languages we communicate in. We've both had to make some adjustments in our behaviors from what we learned that day.  Since that time we've had two children, so when I heard that Dr. Gary Chapman adapted his relationship book for parents I was excited to learn more.

The 5 Love Languages of Children was first written in 1997 with revisions in 2005 and 2012.  The book shares that when a child feels loved they do their best.  It is our job as parents to provide their basic needs including the need for love.  The struggle we have is that not all kids feel love in the same ways.  The 5 Love Languages of Children identifies the love languages children have as Pysical Touch, Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Gifts and Acts of Service and spends a chapter on each explaining them.  The authors share that "children are behaviorally motivated.  They respond to actions - what you do with them."  I loved that the book helps us parents by providing simple suggestions for behaviors and activities for parents that will speak the child's language.  I also really liked that the book helps us discover our child's love language by sharing choices we can offer our kids. It provides choices for age 5, age 10 and at age 15 meaning not matter what age your child is you can pick up this book and start learning how to determine and speak your child's love language.

As I was reading the book my goal was to determine what my 5 year-old son's primary love language is.  The books states the primary language for a child under age 5 is rarely seen, so I'll have to wait and refer to the book again as my daughter gets older.  Even after reading the book and diving into the chapter on how to discover your child's primary love language I'm still uncertain about my son and need to be patient and wait for the "clues".  I'll also offer him some "choices" that should help.  I look forward to speaking his love language and sharing this book with my husband.
