Nutcracker ~ The Music PC Game Review & Giveaway

My kids love to play games on the computer and they love it even more when I play with them, so the night they saw me adding a new game to our laptop they were more than a little excited to join me.  When they heard the music start they were even more interested in playing The Nutcracker Music Game.  The Nutcracker Music Game introduces the music of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker in fun ways through games and puzzles.  It helps them learn about all of the different types of instruments in an orchestra, what musical family they belong to and the sounds they make.

I do feel that my kids are exposed to quite a bit of music, but this game was their first exposure to Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker.  By the time we had played a few of the games my son was humming the melodies like a pro.  The Nutcracker game includes several different games and puzzles within it.  The goal is to play each game and win so that you can collect the magic key and help save The Nutcracker prince.  There are 9 keys to collect by playing games, but there are also other activities including The Nutcracker story as well.  Once you have completed a game and earned your key you can always go back and play that game again or try to complete more levels.  Most of the games my 6 year old son would have no problem playing by himself like "MusiCards" and "Find Me on the Tree".  Others were more challenging puzzle games of determining which instruments you are hearing in a piece of music.  It honestly reminded me of being in my college music appreciation class.  I thought it was great for my son to figure out that we needed to listen closely for a little while before deciding which instruments to choose.  The first night we played we listened to the instructions on how to play and completed a couple of the easier games.  The second night the goal was to earn the rest of our keys, so we could see what happens when we collect them all.

My kids did enjoy playing each of the games although my son's favorites were the memory game and the instruments of the orchestra game.  Personally I enjoyed listening to the music of this holiday classic again.  The music is what sets this game apart from other computer games and the fact that it helps kids with their problem solving and listening skills and expands their musical knowledge while they are having fun is what makes it great.
