Do you love listening to music and singing along to the radio any chance you get? I definitely do. If I'm in the car I've got the radio on to some tunes and if no one's watching I'm singing too. I always feel better when listening to music and I like to think that I know a lot of it. There is a game where I can benefit from this love of music and lyrics. It's called Spontuneous and it's lot of fun.
It's a simple game to play. Here's how you do it:
One player (Tunesmith) says a word and the
others race against each other and the clock to try and blurt out a 5-word
portion of lyrics from any song containing the given Trigger-Word! The player who begins singing first, gets to
roll the dice and advance around the board!
If nobody can sing a song, the Tunesmith must be able to back it up with
a song of their own, or else they roll both dice and move backwards. As players advance around the board, certain
spaces will require them to draw a Spontuneous Card and attempt the crazy
challenge! Whoever reaches finish first
and completes the final challenge, wins the game!
You can play with 4-10 players and it's recommended for ages 9 and up. My family played the game on Thanksgiving and had a great time. My brother and sister-in-law were on a team with my nephew. I was on a team with some help from my mom and my hubby and son were on the third team. We took turns sharing our "trigger" words and trying to stump the other teams. It was hard to stump my brother. He plays guitar in a classic rock band and that guy knows a lot of music I don't know at all! My hubby is lyrically challenged so it was fun to see what songs his trigger words came from. My 9 year old nephew was pretty good at coming up with trigger words & the songs to back it up. He did struggle a little with us coming up with songs that use the word that wasn't the song he had in mind, but he was great help in reading the Spontuneous cards and we were all in for a surprise when we found out the cards don't always help you advance around the board. As for my 6 year old & 3 year old they thought it was great fun watching us try to come up with songs and sing them. The room did get quite loud at times and I got very distracted when I was trying to concentrate and think up my trigger words for the next round. I'm looking forward to playing the game with friends. I think it will make for a fun night!
Now that I've played Spontuneous I find myself thinking about trigger words as I'm listening to music. I'm constantly disecting the lyrics and trying to figure out what words would be good for my list the next time I play. It definitely has made me think about songs in a new way! One last thing to add is the tagline "Talent NOT Required". It makes no difference how well you can sing the song the only that matters is getting some of the words right!
