Captive Starring Kate Mara Review and DVD Giveaway #FlyBy #CaptiveMovie

Disclosure:  This movie was provided free of charge for the purpose of this review.

The movie Captive is based on the true story of Ashley Smith who was held hostage in her own home by Brian Nichols in 2005.  The story was completely new to me as I don't recall hearing about it at the time.  It is based on Ashley's book Unlikely Angel.

Based on a miraculous story about the power of faith, Captive is an "amazing, inspiring" drama about the spiritual collision of two lost souls, Brian Nichols (Golden Globe Nominee David Oyelowo), on the run from police and desperate to make contact with his newborn son, takes recently widowed mother Ashley Smith (Kate Mara) hostage in her own apartment.  Fearing for her life and desperately hoping to see her daughter again, she turns to Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life for guidance.  Ashley and her captor face a crossroads where they discover hope and light in the midst of despair in the moving film that Dick Rolfe, CEO, Dove Foundation hailed as "powerful."

I was most interested in seeing this movie because of the two people playing the main characters.  David Oyelowo has been in a number of things, but is probably best known as playing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the movie Selma. I just recently finished watching the first season of House of Cards, so I know Kate Mara best from that.  Both of the characters they portray in Captive are much different than the roles I know them best for.

I have to confess it was a little tough watching this movie at the beginning. Watching Brian Nichols murder people in the movie and knowing this is how it happened in real life made the first part a bit disturbing. Also watching people use meth isn't pleasant although the movie wasn't graphic with it.  I think the fact that it is based on a true story and the fact that these two people were put together at this time in their lives for a reason does make it all the more powerful.  I honestly expected to hear more of the book The Purpose Driven Life in the movie, but I think it played out well.  Watching the movie made me interested in learning more about the story and I'm glad the movie ended with sharing a little more of Ashley's story.
