Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen Book Review & Giveaway

The Howard B. Wigglebottom series of books were created to be entertaining while still teaching important life lessons like how to listen and feel good about yourself.  There are 10 hardcover books available (soon to be 11) featuring the character Howard B. Wigglebottom: the energetic bunny who learns many a lesson by going through daily trials that children can relate to.

Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen is the second book in the collection that I've had the opportunity to read with my kids.  Listening is one of those skills that kids have to work on at any age, but the book was especially appropriate for my 5 & 3 year olds.  In the story it tells how Howard is always in trouble at school because he just doesn't listen.  I liked that the story wasn't just about not listening to parents at home or not listening to teachers at school.  It also touched on the importance of listening to your friends and listening to your teammates.  The books gives several examples of Howard not listening before he is asked to take a time-out.  He then has time to think about his day and make a decision to be a better listener.  I like how the story then tells about several ways Howard is then rewarded for being a good listener.  He gets a physical reward, but he also is rewarded by keeping himself from harm and getting extra time for play and fun.

As a family we work hard on sharing with the kids what they did well to earn extra play time and by also explaining the consequences when they don't listen as well.  It is an ongoing battle, but this book definitely reinforces the cause & effect relationship in a way I think my son can understand.  At the back of the book you'll find "Suggestions for Lessons and Reflections" that provides multiple talking points to discuss with your child. I appreciate having that as a resource.

My son always enjoys reading new books together and he especially likes reading about familiar characters.  Since he had already been introduced to Howard he was looking forward to see what Howard would be doing in this book.  When asked what his favorite part of the story was he shared that he liked the pictures the best and especially the one where Howard's ears got stuck in the fan.  (I enjoyed that part of the story myself as we are always having to tell my daughter not to play to close to the fan in our room.  I always worry about her hair getting caught in it!)
